How to Identify Antique Furniture

!±8± How to Identify Antique Furniture

Many people unknowingly own or purchase valuable pieces of antique furniture. It is helpful for those who frequently attend garage sales to learn how to recognize an antique piece. Although dealers and serious collectors are best able to distinguish a genuine piece of furniture from a replica, a few small bits of knowledge can go a long way.

Handypersons often like to purchase old pieces of furniture for refinishing purposes. Since most antiques are best left in their original state, many experts recommend finding out the value of a particular piece before engaging in any modifications. It is better to spend a few dollars on an expert opinion than to destroy a piece of furniture that could be worth hundreds or thousands of dollars.

English and American Colonial designs are common, but because these styles embrace a broad range of details, it can be hard to delineate. Regardless of the style, there are ways to tell if a piece is antique. Furniture components were not machine-cut until about 1860, so examining the drawers can provide tell-tale signs. If the drawer was constructed using handmade dovetails, it was produced prior to that time. Older pieces also required the use of hand tools, such as planes and draw-knives, which left nicks and marks in the wood.

True antiques do not often display exact symmetry, as this was impossible to achieve when working solely by hand. These pieces are imperfect and small details can usually be spotted, such as rungs and spindles that are not uniform, or shapes that vary somewhat. Machine-cut pieces are reproduced identically.

Another way to identify an antique is by examining the finish. Oil, wax, and milk paint were used on the earliest pieces and eventually replaced by Shellac. By the mid-1800s, lacquer and varnish became popular finishes, helping to date a later piece. It is possible to test for various finishes, much to the dismay of dealers. If a Shellac finish is dabbed with alcohol, it will dissolve.

Oak represents most of the oldest pieces of furniture, prior to 1700. With the turn of the 18th Century, mahogany and walnut dominated the woodworking world. Pine has always been a popular choice for American products because it is plentiful and easy to manipulate. More valuable pieces can also be found in maple, walnut and cherry.

Quality and condition are the final important factors to consider when shopping for antique furniture. Pieces constructed by a particular designer may be declared valuable, regardless of their age or condition. However, in most cases, original components in great condition equal higher worth.

Cabin and Rustic Decor - The Log Cabin Look

!±8± Cabin and Rustic Decor - The Log Cabin Look

It seems the rustic cabin and lodge look decorating theme has gained much popularity these days.

Picture yourself here: A rustic log home, standing amongst the pine trees, it's steep metal roof dripping with dew from the mornings crisp air, a swirl of smoke spiraling up from the chimney, the birds chirping in the trees, the morning sun rising over the distant hill. A slight breeze blowing, just enough to put the wind chimes into a soft soothing motion. The smell of pine trees, the meadow alive with newly opened wildflowers, in yellows, whites and purples, the sky a crystal clear blue, a hint of wood smoke in the air. You're sitting in your comfy chair, gazing outside upon this majestic beauty, a crackling fire dancing in the stone fireplace, your sipping a steaming mug of hot cocoa, the golden honey tones of your log home, giving you a feeling of warmth, serenity and comfort.

For those of us who are fortunate enough to live this lifestyle, there is no greater feeling. For those of you who merely dream this lifestyle, there is hope. You don't have to live in a secluded forest or nestled next to a remote lake to give the inside of your home a warm cabin feeling.

Not only are we seeing log homes becoming more and more popular, we are also seeing more and more contemporary homes decorating with the cabin décor theme.

There is NOT just one perfect decorating style for a home. Your style should be whatever makes you feel comfortable and secure. You want a place to unwind, a comfortable hang-out, a place where you can feel at ease. Carefully consider your lifestyle and habits, as this will play a great role in your decorating theme. Incorporate what you like in your decorating.

Do you long for the cozy cabin feeling throughout your home, or do you just want one or two rooms that reflect that rustic cabin charm?
There is one item that plays a major role in the rustic cabin feel, this item being wood. Oh, the joy of wood! Bringing Mother Nature's beauty into your home. There is an abundant variety of beautiful wood products to choose from, some of the most commonly used for interior decorating are: Pine, aspen, maple, hickory, alder, cherry, oak, weathered barn wood and red cedar. Wood flooring can generate that country feeling, wood ceilings and wood walls add warmth and coziness to your home. And then, we have the furniture and accessories, coffee tables, end tables, dressers, dining room tables and chairs, desks, kitchen cabinetry, log beds, rustic rocking chairs, and the list goes on and on. Wood, with its distinct splendor, gives a feeling of warmth throughout your home.

Other important aspects of cabin/lodge decorating are color, texture and lighting. Introducing color and texture is essential. I have found that there are no boundaries here. I haven't found a color that does not compliment the woodsy surroundings in a log home. Anything goes, from the pale hues of sage green, buttery yellows and powder blues to the dramatic forest greens, rich purples and deep reds.

Accentuate your home with colors you love. Add braided area rugs to the floor, lay Indian blankets across the backs of furniture. Brightly colored quilts can be folded at the foot of beds. Include rustic touches by adding colorful plush pillows. Gather a bucket of pine cones and fill your wicker baskets. Strategically place pottery on tables and next to furniture. Place vibrant colored placemats on the dining room table. Add handcrafted items throughout your home. Scour estate sales and garage sales for antiques and items from past eras. Think beyond framed art to decorate your walls, anything on the walls can be a captivating display. I have a seven foot aspen log on my bedroom wall above my headboard. I peeled, sanded, finished it with a low gloss varnish and then added some greenery and pine cones. It looks remarkable. Curtains and window coverings can also help to enhance the lodge feeling, and can be handcrafted at a fraction of the price if you have your own sewing machine. Choose materials of different textures and colors and design your window coverings to compliment you decorating theme. Walls can be painted in a variety of colors. One wall in an otherwise white room can be painted in a deep dramatic color, to give warmth. Plants and flowers are great accessories, whether real or artificial, these can add splashes of color throughout your home. Remember, colors create moods, so let your imagination soar.

And now we move on to texture. You can create a rich mix of textures and incorporate visual interest throughout your home with various materials. Something that has always been admired among the cabin lovers is the look of stone. Whether natural or manufactured, stone creates a warm welcoming space. Some of the most widely used are: Marble, slate, granite, moss rock and river rock. If you are fortunate enough to have a massive rock fireplace that extends from floor to ceiling in your great room, then you are one of the lucky ones, so just keep putting wood on that fire (you think that stuff grows on trees). However, the massive stone fireplace is not the only option to enjoying a warm fire. Wood burning stoves come in a variety of sizes and shapes, and generate a huge amount of cabin ambience, while giving off large amounts of radiant heat. If you don't have the massive stone fireplace, but long for the look and feel of stone, there are several less expensive ways to add this distinct look to your home. Adding a stone backsplash in your kitchen will add drama, or a slate entryway at your front door can really bring out the rustic feeling when your guests enter. Marble countertops can give your kitchen that special country feeling.

Another form of adding texture to your decorating is with the accessories you choose. Select accessories that compliment your decorating theme. Include fabrics of all different types, colors and textures. Animal furs, antlers and leather also bring out the rustic feeling. I'm not suggesting that you need to overload your home with taxidermy and wildlife themes, but a rabbit fur on a coffee table, an antler candle holder as a centerpiece for the dining room table, a pair of leather chaps hanging from a peg on the wall or a ratty old straw cowboy hat placed upon a corner table always brings out the country cowboy in all of us.

Last, but not least is lighting. Lighting plays a huge role in any decorating theme. Lighting is basically divided into two categories, natural lighting and artificial lighting. Natural lighting is the light that we receive from our windows and is critical to our homes, as is artificial sources of lighting. First we'll talk about natural lighting. Windows, windows, windows. Big windows, small windows, floor to ceiling windows, half moon windows, a grand wall of windows, windows for viewing sunrises and sunsets. An abundance of glass, letting that wonderful golden sunlight in, all year long. We can enjoy an endless supply of warmth and brightness, and it's absolutely free.

Now I will focus on artificial lighting. Artificial light plays an important role when it comes to home décor. Rare is the rustic home that doesn't feature some pretty remarkable lighting accents. Lighting adds to the appeal of a room and can enhance overall brightness in your home. First you need to consider how much natural light you have and then consider how each room is used. Lighting can be a challenge when deciding where it will be placed. You may want a combination of lighting schemes in a certain room to make it bright and cheery, and in another room you may desire softer lighting with more of a romantic atmosphere. There are hundreds of choices to choose from when shopping for rustic lighting. You can select from various styles, shapes and sizes from an extensive list of electrical lighting manufactures or you can design your own creation and custom order from a vast list of handcraft woodworkers that design beautiful wood creations. So the first thing to do is to decide what works best for your decorating theme, your light fixtures should compliment their surroundings. Rustic lighting, such as, metal wall sconces and fine handcrafted aspen or pine table lamps and floor lamps are the perfect lighting sources to compliment your rustic decorating theme. A chandelier can make a bold statement in your grand entryway. Elk antlers and deer antlers have become very popular with decorative lighting, and look awesome with cabin décor. High ceilings are very common in today's homes, and this is just the spot for a massive chandelier to light up your great room. Track lighting can illuminate a specific area. Handcrafted aspen table lamps are a favorite of log home owners who cherish the classic cabin look. Place handcrafted aspen table lamps on your end tables. Set an aspen floor lamp next to your comfy chair for your overhead reading light. For an added touch of charm, you can furnish your lamps with handmade lampshades.

Another lighting suggestion is candles. Colorful candles, candles of every shape and size, aromatic candles in every scent imaginable. Candles in each and every room. Not only do candles give off a soft romantic glow, they also come in a variety of scents and aromas to heighten the senses and create a warm welcoming space. Oil lamps are also a great lighting suggestion and do the same as candles, but their lighting is brighter and lamp oil isn't scented, however, I found that it does come in vibrant colors of blue, red, clear and yellow.
The overall beauty of your home can be significantly enhanced with the appropriate lighting.

Have fun with your decorating, and just remember, you home is more then just a place to live, it a place in your heart. Do what makes you feel good, get creative, incorporate a piece of yourself, add a touch of your lifestyle, and the results will be nothing less then spectacular.

Make Your Bedroom Look Fabulous With Contemporary Bedroom Furniture

!±8± Make Your Bedroom Look Fabulous With Contemporary Bedroom Furniture

A great bedroom needs a touch of creativity, some inspiration, your personal style and some pretty good taste and sense of style. You can make your plain walls and boring room look absolutely fabulous with some cool and contemporary bedroom furniture! The secret lies in picking the right furniture without losing your personality in your room.

Since your bedroom is where you'd spend your time relaxing and giving yourself some 'me' time, it has to go without saying that it's where you should be most comfortable and be able to just laze around without a care of anything else. So your priority is to make sure that you are comfortable in your own room. You can mix up styles by picking modern looking furniture but maintaining some sort of traditional bedroom feel to it, if that's your kind of thing.

Start with the main furniture first, which would be your bed and closet. You can have a nice wooden bed in shades of brown or white or a metal framed bed with a great modern like headboard. There are so many designs in today's market that you'd be spoilt for choice, for sure. If you'd like to go with the most 'in' furniture piece, then pick a sleek platform bed, which doesn't really have a frame but an actually platform instead. You can pick out a gorgeous silk quilt to throw over and some fluffy throw cushions to cuddle against during the day.

As for your wardrobe, solid wood looks great in any type of bedroom and it's very practical too as it will last you a long time, but for a more chic and modern look, go for tainted wood or PVC pieces. The best ones, however, have got a wooden base with creatively designed doors and insides of all sorts of colors. White makes a perfect pick as it will match the wall color of your choice and your bedroom setting as well. You can even pick to have sliding doors or open ones and if you'd like a two, three or even four door wardrobe, depending on your budget and room floor space available.

A few tips you should take note of to use contemporary furniture is to always pick bedroom pieces that are sleek and grounded. It also helps to keep your room theme to a few colors and make it uniformed as well. too many colors and shapes can sometimes throw off the balance of your room, taking away the coziness and charm of it. For a more elegant feel, mix and match white pieces with dark wood colors, shades of dark brown and even black looks great in comparison to light browns.

In addition to that, you can also experiment around with unique pieces when it comes to dressers, tables, shelves and chairs. Pick something with a frosted glass maybe or a side table instead of a regular one. Flip through magazine or visit showrooms to give you ideas and inspiration. It helps to keep furniture at a minimum and opt for bean bags, throw pillow, funky rugs and some room accessories like lamps and funny shaped mirrors as well. These items merely add character to you room, so pick them based on your own preferences and style.

Let those creativity juices flow and have a good time, because it's your room so have fun doing it up your way!

7 Wood Furniture Painting Ideas

!±8± 7 Wood Furniture Painting Ideas

Some people don't have any ideas about painting, especially when it comes to their furniture. If you want to get good furniture painting ideas, then read on.

You can paint your furniture anyway you like; you can paint it in white, in strips, or even paint it with the same color as the wall. As long as you're comfortable with the color of the paint, then proceed with your painting project. Here are great wood furniture painting ideas:

1. For best wood furniture painting results, the proper temperature should be maintained in the room. If you stripped your wood furniture, make sure that you apply an acrylic primer before applying any oil-based gloss, eggshell, or any color of acrylic paint.

2. Paint your furniture in a shade that is in contrast with the wall's color. This way, you can define the furniture and the wall. You should also consider where the furniture is located. If you want, you can paint the furniture found in your bedroom with the color that suits your personal style; while the furniture found in other parts of the house can be painted in other subtle colors.

3. Some people prefer eggshell finish because the gloss finish can have a deadening effect. While you're painting, always do it in small sections. Lap marks can be avoided if you keep wet edges.

4. If you want, you can also incorporate effects like broken color into your wood furniture. It is highly recommended that paints which are oil-based are best for wood furniture.

5. To add more color to your wood furniture, you can stain it because this allows the furniture's natural grain patterns to show through.

6. After staining your furniture, you can apply varnish so that the furniture can have a tough coat. Varnishes are available in satin and high gloss finishes.

7. If you have leftover paints, combine those that have identical color in one can and then close it tightly. Keep it for later use.

Painting your wood furniture is a great idea to maintain its newness and to preserve its beautiful appearance. So if you have pieces of wood furniture at home, don't forget these cool furniture painting ideas.

Walnut Cedar Chests

!±8± Walnut Cedar Chests

Chests are pieces of furniture that are both functional and aesthetically pleasing. They could add much needed flair in any room in the house, and could serve as a container for other articles. Chests in bedrooms could contain children's toys, clothes, books and other things. It could hold important family memoirs like letters, papers, pictures and photos. Many chests are designed and carved to give out a classic vibe, while some designed to be more minimalist and streamlined. But whatever design or purpose a chest may have in your home, it all comes down to the question of whether or not your chest will last. Whether it will outlive you and become an antique is another question. This is why it is important to consider the materials that are used to make the chest.

Choosing the Right Materials

Hardwoods are the most reliable materials that are used when it comes to wooden chests and furniture in general. Hardwoods are strong and tough, and they come from natural sources. Synthetic woods like plywoods break down easily, but hardwood are more resistant to wear and tear. Furthermore, many hardwoods have beautiful natural colors that add to the beauty and design of a piece of furniture. Some hardwoods even vary in color depending on how they were processed. This gives hardwoods a lot of versatility when it comes to using them as raw materials for furniture.

A good hardwood combination to use to make wooden chests is cedar and walnut. These two hardwoods have distinct characteristics that combine beautifully to make a very striking article. The very fact that they are hardwoods would assure you that chests that are made of walnut and cedar would be very strong and would last more than a lifetime.

Cedar wood is popularly used as materials for furniture because of its properties. Cedar trees are chiefly grown and harvested in some areas because of high demand for its quality wood. Cedar wood is very tough and long lasting, and so many of cedar furniture become antiques. It is decay-resistant and weather-resistant and scented. Cedar is also most popularly used as wooden linings for closets and cabinets that are made to hold clothes especially woollen ones because cedar wood repels moths and their grubs. It is can also absorb moisture and deodorize and so it is used to make shoe holders and trees. Cedar is also known to be one of the 'tonewoods', because solid aged cedar produces warm tones in guitars and other musical instruments. Walnut wood on the other hand, is another good hardwood prized for its attractive colors and its tight grain which when polished produces a very smooth finish. Walnut is one of those hardwoods that change its color depending on how it is processed. Walnut wood color ranges from creamy white to the very dark brown color, similar to dark chocolate. It could also have a dull brown color when oven dried and a purple-brown color when air dried. Because of this, it has been used for many furniture. Walnut wood is not only used in furniture, but also in car dashboards and in guns and rifles. Like cedar, walnut is also used to make stringed instruments.

These properties when combined make a very good piece of furniture, especially on wooden chests. The colors of walnut wood give distinct aesthetic value to your wooden chest. With the variety of colors that walnut wood can assume, it will be easy for you to choose the color that suits your preferences. You can also choose the color that best fits the theme and design of the room you want to place your chest. Since it produces a very smooth finish, it can immediately command attention and brighten up any dull room. It's strong qualities make walnut wood great for the chest's exterior. It's weather proof, so it can resist common changes in humidity and sunlight. It makes it easy for the chest to last longer because of the resilience of the wood. Walnut wood is also known to age and become more beautiful as it ages. The beauty of your wooden chest appears more as the piece of furniture lasts longer with you.

Interior Considerations

Wooden chests with cedar and walnut combinations usually have the cedar as the lining of the chest. The properties of cedar make it good to be the material most in contact with the things you put inside it. This makes it good for storing clothing articles and other cloths. Since cedar is moth resistant, storing clothes in a chest made of cedar would help preserve your clothes, especially woollen ones. Same goes for the other things you put inside the chest. Books, photos and other memoirs stay well protected inside the chest. Since cedar wood has this nice fresh scent, you wouldn't fear to have your clothes smelling like the dull smell of wooden cabinets. Cedar also deodorizes so it can neutralize any strong smells that can take away the freshness of newly washed clothes. Since cedar is strong and resilient, you can be sure that the chest will remain as beautiful and functional as it is whatever you put inside it.

This combination of two strong hardwoods would guarantee the fact that your wooden chest will last. It can even outlive you and be part of your family's heirloom. This furniture is made to be the antiques of the next generation. A cedar walnut chest is surely an excellent purchase to make.

Country Victorian - The Best of Two Styles

!±8± Country Victorian - The Best of Two Styles

Country Victorian merges the elegance of Victorian decor with the relaxed ambiance of country style. Inviting interiors are created by blending gracious simplicity with the romance of the country cottage or rural retreat. The Victorians loved their country manors and retreats that took them away from the formalities and demands of city life. In that vein, Victorians decorated their country homes, lodges or "cottages" with comfortable furnishings, inviting color and a scaled-down presentation of the ornate formality of their city homes. Collections, memorabilia of travel excursions, hunting trophies, the love of the outdoors and English gardens are featured in these warm, welcoming interiors. In comparison to general Victorian style, in Country Victorian, colors are light and fresh, architectural embellishments are kept to a minimum and furnishings are often a medley of styles.

Here are some tips for decorating every room of your home with this casual, yet charmingly refined style.

Colorful, Welcoming Entries

Playful Victorian sensibilities are reflected in bright colors for the entry door, such as sunflower yellow or cerulean blue. Plants stands, flower boxes and hanging plants are standard equipment as are bird baths and feeders that invite feathered friends. Once inside, umbrella stands, oak hall trees or free standing wood or iron coat racks, a small bench or even a recycled church pew invite convenience and comfort. A small hall table, lamp and mirror are perfect touches if there is room and wrought iron candle wall sconces are an elegant touch. Be sure to include fresh flowers in the mix. An old crock can hold fresh flowers or a wreath can be hung on the door or entry wall.

Casually Elegant Parlors

Well-to-do Victorians called this the Drawing Room, but those of the middle-class referred to it as the parlor; today we call it the living room. This was the place where the family gathered nightly or to entertain guests. The room draws on a variety of patterns and colors: Think diamond patterned wall paper in pale blue with floral patterns on a pair of wing chairs, check pillows and floral drapes. Casual symmetry is important, with balanced accessories on the fireplace mantle and a pair of comfortable upholstered flanking the hearth. The key is to combine casual - the chairs do not have to match in style or fabric - with formal; two upholstered chairs of the same scale balance the space in front of the fireplace.

Romantic Bedrooms

This personal retreat will often feature gently used or mismatched boudoir pieces that may have been passed down from the city home. Painted furniture and natural finishes of various woods freely mix with brass, wicker and metal. Piles of pillows are tossed upon the bed, a tray and tea service stands at the ready on a side table, and a vase of fresh flowers is always on a dresser or night stand. Collectibles, family photographs, miniatures and heirlooms, a pair of baby shoes, repeated hues in fabrics of different pattern, wallpaper, floral area rugs and bric-a-brac fill the room with layers of interest and color. The whole intention is to create a very personal, highly detailed space.

Cheerful Kitchens

Cheery, oak or pine cabinets with moldings and vintage knobs will provide a nod to the past. Painted cabinetry in buttery yellows or soothing greens and blues are also great choices and contrast can be created with classic white subway tiles on backsplashes and countertops. Choose graceful curved faucets in rubbed bronze for vintage appeal. Open shelving, hanging pot racks, fabric valances around the sink and vintage style appliances will bring authenticity. Don't forget to display collectibles like teapots, vintage tins and canisters, hang plates on the walls and stock shelves with plants, striped nested mixing bowls, spices and antique bottles.

Wire, Bedrooms, White and More Dollhouse Furniture Fun

!±8± Wire, Bedrooms, White and More Dollhouse Furniture Fun

Using Wire with Dollhouse Furniture

Looking for a nontraditional design for your furniture? Wire does what wood cannot. In this manner the wire can represent any variety of furniture shapes and colors. Wire will appear in dollhouse rooms, but it is most prevalent in dollhouse accessories, and outdoor furniture.

Dollhouse Bedrooms

Every dollhouse needs a bedroom. When you choose your dollhouse bedroom, you will be astounded at the variety-there are lots of furniture pieces to choose from, and they all have different colors, styles, and designs. Many sets come with custom-designed bedding, detailed engravings, and other specialized touches.

Coordinating dollhouse furniture: White

Traditionally white furniture remained in bathrooms and bedrooms, but recently there has been an increase in the popularity of this color. White can be coordinated with any furniture type, room, flooring, or even wallpaper. White furniture is also very easy to clean and upkeep.

Dollhouse funiture Scales: Half Inch

Dollhouse scales tell you that you are buying the right sized furniture for your dollhouse. If the scale is half inch or quarter inch, it will say so in the title; all other items are on a one inch scale.

Dollhouse scales show how many inches of furniture correspond to a foot, or 12 inches, of real life furniture. For example, a dollhouse dresser that is 2 inches tall represents a 4 foot tall real dresser. In other scales, such as 1 inch and quarter inch, different sizes would represent that same dresser.

If you do not know the scale of furniture you need for your dollhouse, use a ruler to determine the floor-to-ceiling height on the bottom floor of your dollhouse. An 8-12 inch height means it is built on a 1 inch scale. Heights between 4-6 inches use a half inch scale; heights between 2-3 inches are on a quarter inch scale.

Unfinished Dollhouse Furniture and Kits

Unfinished furniture and furniture kits give you the same satisfaction and freedom that you get from building your own dollhouse kit. Unfinished furniture items are already assembled but can be decorated in any way you want; they are quite sturdy. Furniture kits are unassembled, but once you put them together they will appear as they do in the picture.

Game and Music Furniture

If you are looking to add some style and fun to your dollhouse, adding a music or game room is the way to go Music rooms could feature any type of instruments (some that really play music, and make your home more sophisticated and cultured. Game rooms really draw the eye and make viewers smile; they also make dollhouses feel more homey and "real".

Using Wicker with Dollhouse Furniture

Who would have thought that they actually make furniture with wicker? It is the result of interlacing branch, wire, vine, or bamboo around a furniture frame. Most furniture sets that have a wicker design are made from wire, as there are not much miniature bamboo trees. It is a high quality design that you will find in outdoor sets or in some modern dollhouse sets.
